The fish and chip shop in Aro St has pics of it - this big jerry-rigged timber thing. The stream goes all the way down to the harbour where they've set up this weird artificial wetlands thing in a park. If you'd gone down Epuni St, just after the shops on the right, there's the ruins of a WWII hospital in a reserve. It's mostly overgrown so I've never been able to determine how much has been left. Can't seem to find photos of it extant either. rikko commented on rikko's post 9 days agoHere's a bit of additional info that might be of interest...even so far as to prove the existance of an old subway under central Auckland. Excerpts from several sources... "On no project of metropolitan benefit did the Council labour longer, if not always consistently, than a modern electric railway system featuring a central city tunnel. First proposed in 1923, the scheme languished until 1950, finally being scrapped by the National Governmant in 1976." "The Herald had a telling chart of the decades of years of talking and reports on rail but never any action. And people wonder we are so cynical things will ever change? 1923: Railways minister Gordon Coates supports city-to-Morningside underground rail link. 1937: Underground rail link briefly raised as a way to relieve unemployment. 1949: Government promises electrification. 1951: City bureaucrats begin pushing a "roads first" policy. 1950s: Politicians join bureaucrats in favour of motorways. 1969: New ...read more dirtyfilthy commented on p0stal_b0b's post 9 days agothis is exactly the kind of info we want on this sub-board :) dirusion commented on tangy's post 9 days agowhen I mean lend I mean give ;) dirusion commented on asphyxiac's photo 10 days agoFuck I should have looked harder eh, theres the cunt covert_one commented on dirusion's comment 10 days agoNah, its still there, but for some reason fuckface didn't upload those photos. actually, theres some photos missing.... wtf asphyxiac? covert_one commented on rob's comment 10 days agomy sentiments exactly.
