warlust's experience @ Heathcote Malt WorksMalt WorksThis old malting plant is by far the most impressive site I currently know of. The best place to enter the site is through a trail of bushes starting at the carpark for the soccer field. This place is somewhat well protected and alot of locals must know about this place because holes in the fence get made and patched up regularly. When I went there first there was a patch of the fence with a make-shift ladder and the razor wire cut away. The hanger building next to the main entrance seems to be in-use and I’ve heard a company might be using it to do sound recording. The first building I went into was the large one on the far left hand side, it has no doors and the first floor had large hollow rooms with some machinery still in place. There was a ladder leading between floors and about four floors in total. In the mid section of the building was a cool tunnel / passage-way that was fun to explore and lead into a dark room with a ladder and water in the bottom, we didn’t have a torch and couldn’t see what was in it properly. There is more rooms and ladders on the other side of the building, but a few of the higher rooms are full of bird shit and probably not worth looking at too hard. From the top story there’s a pretty good view of the surrounding houses and park. The main silo building is the most impressive, and starts with about two floors of basements. In the lower basement there’s about 10cm of water and you walk under the pointed bottoms of the silos, and the far end of the first basement is a staircase that leads up and outside where you can walk over a gang way to get into a prefab building that’s tacked onto the side of the main building and has a reasonably big machine inside it. The main building is about eight to ten stories high and has an elevator shaft and a staircase. There are a few floors on the way to the top with some leading off to the side and down small flights of stairs to maintence rooms. The top floor spans the entire length of the building and goes above the silos, there’s a big machine with a drill-type blade that goes from one end to the other and from this floor you can also access the roof, which has a turret you can walk up on top of, the view from outside is amazing and you’re up really high. There are other buildings in the site which we’ve been into, like the electricity room and the shower block. There’s also a big factory type building at the end of the site which I haven’t been into, and one more smaller, two-story building which I also haven’t been into. The two main buildings also have many more rooms and passage-ways which I haven’t described, and there’s a storm water tunnel that starts inside the park next door and leads into the site which I haven’t yet been down. |
