dirusion's experience @ Godley HeadGodley Head sealed bunkerAbout 10 years ago I was lucky enough to be able to get into the sealed bunker under Godley Head. Unfortunately it was purely opportunistic and no camera was taken along. We found that a few of the iron bars on the airvent stopping people from getting in had been bent aside and we were able to squeeze through and find there was a dodgey rope ladder dangling down into the bunker. I can’t remember how deep it went but it seemed to take a very long time to reach the bottom and inside was much bigger than I expected. There were numerous large rooms but the lighting we had was only one shitty torch between about 5 people so it was quite hard to see. Once we reached close to the cliff there was a stream of light coming in and it turns out the bunker comes out on the side of the cliff through a round passage way where you need to crouch down to get through, once on the side of the cliff you can see it would be pretty hard to get to the cliff opening without abseiling gear. We went back into the bunker and there was a huge concrete staircase going up a good couple of stories which ends up leading back up to the surface where the main locked entrance is. After wresting with the rope ladder one more time in order to get out it felt good to have my feet back on solid ground, nothing more worrying then climbing a possibly very old rope ladder in the pitch black not being able to see up or down. |

yeah we wnt for a wander up there last night, the main doors now have a huge master key padlock on them, and that is covered by a good foot and a half long square steel tube with the lock right that top, and the air vent on the top the bunker has obviously been upgraded as well and would be very destructive to open.
and also there is wiring for lighting now going into the tunnel same as the other ones on site but also there is another conduit running in which i can only assume may be some kind of alarm system
I bet the DOC guy on site just uses it for storage or something lame like that
man that would be worthy of a beating if thats what he’s done….sigh…..i’m suprised they don’t do open days like they do at cracroft caverns, maybe its become unstable….
