After picking away at this location for over a year, we finally got the chance to split this sweet juicy peach wide open. Demolition has begun at Christchurch Women’s Hospital in earnest, and we’ve pretty much been all over the place now. Possibly the most interesting thing was the semi-flooded basement of the nurses hostel (only about one inch of water). Lots of cool pipes and shit, plus a mini-tunnel (see our previous experience at this location). Because Christchurch’s water table is so high all the basements & plant rooms require constant pumping to keep them dry. Now the place is being demolished the pumps have been turned off, meaning this basement will only become more flooded as time continues.

Also kinda neat is getting on the highest roof point and looking out over the city.

We also found a chair and a television (on! and tuned to a blank channel) near reception, which might be where the night-time security guard hangs out.

Pretty much the entire hospital is connected together so you can just bowl round. Everything of value has been removed, so most of the wards are extremely similar, little uninteresting and empty rooms with a sprinkling of trash and so forth, with all the furniture being removed to particular places in the hospital, presumably for salvage,

We couldn’t find any morgue or decently big tunnel systems. Not to say they aren’t there to be found, but I suspect that the women’s hospital simply sends dead babies ten minutes across town to the main hospital for processing. While we did go over large sections of the hospital, there are definitely maintenance areas and plant rooms we have not been into, so there are still plenty of interesting places to discover and post to slackninja :)

This location is being actively demolished – the top two floors of one wing are pretty much gutted and have had the hydraulic digger spade smashed through the walls and windows – so get in quick.

Bit obvious now, but at the moment, alarms are off in the parts that are still standing. Roving security still on-site though
