rob's experience @ Christchurch Women's HospitalScouting out the hospitalI think this place has been empty for about 9 months now.. and it’s size and complexity, as well as its apparent high-security tempts me every time I drive past the place. I’ve had a couple of previous excursions here that pretty much ended in dissapointment (one in a dusty crawlspace and the other in a small basement that provided no access to the main buildings). A few weeks ago a friend and I sussed out a probable entrance to the compound and I’d been dragging foot in regards to going back to try it out. Recently though, me and some mates decided to have a go at cracking the razor wire-sealed nut that is the old chch women’s hospital. After some blatant fence jumping, we found ourselves in bushes which we stumbled through into a lit courtyard that was hidden from the road. The hospital is powered. Lights come on inside and out of the hospital around sunset and red LEDs can be seen at various angles through the windows. Once we had paused to catch our breath and congratulate ourselves, the others looked around while I snapped a few shots of the courtyard. We realised that we were still barred from accessing the area in front of the main entrance of the hospital. Unfortunately our only real route appeared to down an alleyway guarded by multiple motion-sensor lights – we ran the gauntlet, keeping low behind the fence that made up one side of the alley, of course the gate at the end was bolted and padlocked. We rapidly scrambled up and over, trying to avoid being caught like deer in the security lights. We found ourselves in another courtyard, which we skipped over in search of the main entrance, going around the wing of the one of the buildings, we were presented with the main courtyard and entrance! We fucked around here for a bit, checking the integrity of the building’s security at ground level – it is top notch. There is a panel visible that indicates that the buildings fire alarms (and possibly burglar alarms?) are active and working correctly. Also we found that while the entrance’s electronic doors are securely padlocked, they are still running and appear to try and open when you pass in front of them. At this point 2 of my mates decided to leave via a different route to avoid the sensor-light gauntlet on the way out. With only 2 of us left, we went back to the courtyard where we had initially found ourselves after dodging the security lights. Over the top of a fully-lit corridor we spied some catwalks on the roof of what we assumed was the boiler room due to the smoke stack. We milled around and started to make plans on how to get there when we heard sirens in the distance – although we figured they were probably unrelated to us, we did decide this was the cue to leave and we hastily made our way to the exit used by our friends only a few mintutes earlier. |
