Went fishing around the corner from Taylor’s Mistake. While climbing around the hills we spotted what appeared to be a tunnel entrance a couple of bays over. We were blocked by a really strange looking fence and a guard sheep on our first attempt at access.

With a bit of climbing we re-discovered the track and, to our relief, some stairs. The fence turned out to be protecting the area from predators.

The tunnel/mine was neither. I have no idea what it used to be. Maybe a shelter of use during the war? There was evidence of a fire place. The existence of a chimney suggests that there was once a roof over a floor the protruded out over the rocks. Any roof and floor have since long gone. Maybe it was a DOC observation shelter. Whatever it was, the area has been transformed into a conservation area for sea birds.

Harris Bay: The Archbold family originally owned the cave Bach now largely demolished. It was sold in the early 1950’s to Frank Waters who substantially upgraded the Bach. He lived there full time, walking in and out each day to work in Sumner. To the east of the accommodation is a small cave, which was used as a tool shed.

That’s really interesting – how did you find out that information? We checked out the tool shed as well and I’ve got some photos somewhere. Will throw them up when I have time.

apparently there used to be quite a few houses built around here by squatters, starting with the wee batches in taylors mistake and carrying on around the heads. now only the ones actually built in the bay remain but theres quite a bit of evidence of the crazy wee shacks that people cemented into the caves around the coast.
