Another location from my trip to Melbourne in December 2007. Determined to see some Australian abandonments, I set off one morning heading towards a brick smoke-stack I had seen from my hotel room. On the way I spotted the old-school looking roof of this old brewery and decided to check it out.

The ground floor was sealed tight as a nun’s cunt, but I’ve started to get a knack for spotting makeshift ladders and the like so I found a way in without too much trouble..

The older building looks really cool from the outside, especially the design of the roof. I made my way up through the floors, determined to get out onto the top of the tower. The building is mostly brick and concrete, but the upper floor is entirely made out of wood, most of which is severely rotted. Following the thick beams that were supporting the decaying floor, and trying to keep something solid within reach at all times, I managed to traverse the upper floor and gain access to a sort-of-balcony. This was about 2M below the top of the roof of the building and was probably used for maintenance purposes back when the place was operational.

The wooden steps to the very top of the roof had rotted so badly that they had actually collapsed onto the lower level – there was no way I was reaching the very top of this place without some kind of grappling hook, a fair bit of upper body strength and a gigantic set of balls.

Content with the height that I’d reached, I whipped out the camera and had a look around. Hidden quite high up in a sheltered wee spot I found some Cave Clan markings dated from sometime in 2004 (iirc).

Heading back down the tower, I moved across to the newer part of the building that mostly consists of silos. It was kinda cool just chilling out up here and looking out over the city.

There was a pretty cool piece of graffiti art, designed to be viewed from above, located on the roof of the floor that joins the old tower to the newer silos.

The silos also had a small elevator machine room, one of my favourite features in multi-storey abandonments.

After leaving the brewery I walked for maybe another 40mins trying to find the smoke-stack that was my original destination. I did get to it eventually – it turned out to be a shot-tower that was used to make old ammunition. It was pretty cool, and I would have loved to have gone up it, but the only potential entrance I could see involved climbing a wall then squeezing through a tiny gap surrounded by barbed wire and blackberry. Naturally by this stage I couldn’t be fucked ;)
