Was curious about this location since myself and a friend abseiled down the face of it during a public holiday a few years ago, theres security patroling through on weekdays but apart from routine maintenance checks there are no permanent workers, the whole station is remote operated from Hamilton

Don’t get cocky though, the main building housing the electric systems is packed with security cameras and theres a electrified fence topped with razor wire at all ground level entrypoints, the only sane way in is through a service tunnel about 1.5 km West

Pictures tell the story pretty much, drove down on Xmas day out of sheer boredom, planned nothing and got ridiculously far inside which doesnt surprise me considering this is NZ and not Paranoid-Delusional-Terrorphobe America :P

From the graffiti and near-fossilised possum skeleton id guess no-ones infiltrated since ‘92 and the last check was at least a year ago, theres a gate halfway in that we left unlocked, just undo the wire between the chain and padlock (make sure you do it up again when you leave, dont want one of those checks to actually discover something lol)

I’d recommend staying in the superstructure (concrete tunnels) or you’re gonna get caught on camera
