_"*Waikune Prison* held around 100 minimum-security inmates. Inmates worked in nearby forestry areas, did track maintenance for the Department of Conservation, cleared ski-field roads and even did the laundry for Tongariro’s famous Grand Chateau Hotel. In the mid-1980s the prison required a large amount of capital investment to upgrade its buildings and infrastructure. The government of the time, after a select committee hearing, decided to close the facility. Inmates were moved to other sites around the country and the prison officially closed in 1986."_ Grifstar told us about this place so after some R&R laxing out in the natural hot springs in Taupo we headed off towards National Park. Sorry photos are shit - weather was shit! Will take some better ones around the place when I go up there in a couple of weeks Have spent a lot of time in National Park and always wanted to check this place out.. Finally got around to doing it last summer, and was well worth it! Unfortunatly it has an occupied house on both neiboring properties, but I was lucky that day everything was deserted. (I think summer is a good time to check this out as you dont have the snow crowds around) First I explored around the big buildings that you can see on the map closest to the road, where there is some impressive old huge machinery to climb on, I think maybe some sort of baking purpose??
