Wigram air traffic to end
Written 16:54:45 13/07/2008 by tangy More than 90 years of aviation history at Wigram, from World War 1 biplanes to modern skydiving, will end in February. The 250ha airfield, which has been operating since 1916, will make way for about 2000 new houses. Airfield owner Ngai Tahu Property sent a letter to all tenants this week informing them the airfield will close on February 28 after being closed to air traffic from September.
Plenty of buildings remain, possible tunnel underneath airfield running to near by school. Yet to be confirmed. |

Depressing. Getting rid of good ol’ Wigram to make room for more terrifyingly mundane suburbia. sigh
exactly the same thing happened to sunnyside. it’s a fucking crime
Has anyone “investigated” this site in or out??, and do they have any secuirty, i know southerin institue of tech is nearby but do the old airforce buildings have any security measure as they are still currently at this point defense property
not that i know of – i’d say it’ll remain very much in use until february and probably even a bit after that. proceed with caution :)
don’t think any of the base is owned by the dept. of defence – it got gifted to the city council who then sold it to ngai tahu iirc.
I’ve spent a lot of time at Wigram, and to be honest, there’s not all that much there any more. Most of the old buildings have been demolished, and the ones that are there are pretty boring. Unles you can get into the hangars, which, well, you probably can’t. Heh. And I don’t even know if there’s much in them anymore.
that sounds a little defeatist ;)
Had a look around for these tunnels that are meant to exist , found 3 interesting hatches that do have air shafts, they are old looking and only secured by padlocks. Will be going back and try these out.
good call
mint if you need any help with padlocks, let me know ;-) me and padlocks have a special relationship…
